The Washington State Cosmetology Apprenticeship Program exists to equip, empower and encourage individuals from all walks of life as they pursue and secure a career in the field of cosmetology. We endeavor to provide an exceptional experience by way of membership training in an approved salon and/or spa environment.
What began as an advanced training program for licensed cosmetology professionals has now become a true apprenticeship program. From the beginning, Kay Hirai owner of Studio 904, has been the visionary behind this program. She envisioned a state-wide program offering an alternative way into the beauty industry for those who could not otherwise, for whatever reason, attend traditional training. After nearly 5 years of direct entry pilot programs, this program became permanent when Governor Gregoire signed SHB 2427 on March 14th, 2008.
Our innovative program allows an entrant without a state cosmetology license to receive on the job training as an employee with pay and benefits in an approved salon or spa environment while fulfilling the state educational requirements for licensing.
We are state regulated by the Department of Licensing as well as Labor and Industries so the required hours are greater than those of traditional training in order to meet each department’s standards. Career opportunities include cosmetology, esthetics, manicuring and barbering. Depending upon the profession, total hours can range from 2,144 to 3,216.
